## Definitions

- **AI voice agent**: software that holds a spoken conversation over the phone or another voice channel, typically combining speech-to-text, a language model and text-to-speech, and that can take actions such as booking, routing or updating a CRM.
- **AI receptionist**: a voice agent that answers inbound calls for a business — answering common questions, taking messages, routing and booking appointments.
- **Speech-to-text (ASR)**: converts caller audio into text in real time.
- **Text-to-speech (TTS)**: generates the agent's spoken reply from text.
- **Latency**: the delay between a caller finishing speaking and the agent starting to reply; a central quality factor for voice agents.
- **Containment**: the share of calls resolved by the agent without transfer to a human.
